Reading is beautiful way of Social bonding

Not only do good reading skills benefit students academically, but they are also a skill required for lifelong success.

As parents, there are many different strategies you can use to motivate your child to read.

At times kids do not want to read because they think.

  • This is a task
  • They find it monotonous.
  • They face difficulty in pronunciation & reading.

Every child learns and understands the information differently. Some children tend to have a love for reading; some may not. Do not worry if your child falls under the latter category. Parent’s play a major role here in being the educators in a child’s life. Even when the child is in the womb, they recognise the parent’s voices. So reading to your baby for a few minutes gives them the comfort of your voice and listening abilities of the language.

Reading is Fun

Let’s see, as a parent how can we bring a change, which can make reading a fun element for kids:-

  1. Taking out daily 15 mins to sit next to them and read aloud. This can help in social, communication and language skills.
  2. Make sure to have the books at a visible and approachable place in the house.
  3. Try to fetch the book of some character, your child fancies. Every kid loves some or other character, and they bound to get interested to know more about something of there choice. It will help in developing an interest in reading.
  4. Avoid more texts and prefer illustration and picture books at an early age to hook them to books.
  5. Read in front of your child. Be a role model for them. Kids are the best observers, and they tend to imitate there parents.
  6. Show the various options to your child, discuss books with them, and more importantly allow them to choose what they want to read.
  7. Make a nice cosy and comfortable reading space in the house, need not be big, just enough light with few books to place and sit with your kids in those corners making sure to read along with them just for 15 minutes every day. The habit will already be picked up slowly and over time.
  8. Encourage books as gifts in intervals of time; it can be a birthday present or any occasion. You can request friends & family members to do the same.
  9. Its an era of technology, and kids love exploring different gadgets, so there are many reading apps and websites as well, which can be explored and shown to them. They might like reading on a kindle or any digital platform. E-readers can develop an interest in reading through this and can turn into an avid reader. Don’t be averse to technology.
  10. You can have a small parents community where the books can be exchanged amongst kids. With this, they learn to share and have more varieties. Also develops social bonding.

Some children might not want to read and are more playful. For them, you need to take things slow. Spending even 10–15 minutes daily reading to them is also good. Kids are very particular about their stuff and tend to take care. Like my daughter, everyday sleeps with a book and a soft toy next to her. This gives her a comforting feeling. They can snuggle books, toys or anything they love.

Benefits of reading are endless, but to sum it up, it opens their window of imagination, they learn a lot about different things.

I would share my experiences with my daughter on reading habits and the benefits which reading has in my next blog.
